WebThe skin prick test (SPT) is the most common test for the diagnosis of allergy. SPT is performed by pricking the skin, usually in the volar surface of the forearm, with a lancet through a drop of an allergen extract and is usually the first choice test in the diagnostic workup for allergic diseases because of its reliability, safety, convenience and low cost. WebSkin prick testing should not be requested if the result of the test is unlikely to improve the management of the patient, e.g. confirming an allergy to pollen in a patient with obvious seasonal allergic rhinitis, whose symptoms are well controlled, is unlikely to be helpful. Skin prick testing detects IgE bound to mast cells in the skin.
