He was a member of the Whitaker family. He is mainly known for his work on the birds of Tunisia, and for being involved in the foundation of the Sicilian football club US Città di Palermo.

April is a good month for bird-watching in Sicily - especially near the coast - as you get many of the migrants (including storks) passing over. In the West, if you head to the salt pans in Trapani, you should see flamingoes and spoonbills as well as egrets, herons and other smaller waders.
